Working at a financial institution, I had no choice but to mention this interesting news piece...

Police: Man Uses Pitchfork to Rob Bank

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) - A man used a pitchfork to rob a bank Wednesday, police said. Fred Simunovic, 47, was charged with armed robbery after police spotted him at the Key West ferry terminal, trying to sail to Fort Myers.

Police said Simunovic entered the Keys Federal Credit Union with a pitchfork in a trash bag and told a teller: "I'm dying of AIDS, I'm homeless and I'm robbing you."

After threatening the teller with the pitchfork, he ran out with an undisclosed amount of money and discarded the garden tool behind the bank, Detective Sgt. Donie Lee said.

Police found Simunovic at the terminal after the ferry captain refused to let him board because he appeared intoxicated. After Simunovic consented to a search, police found $1,859 in cash on him, and said he could not explain where the money came from.

The bank teller and manager later positively identified Simunovic.

I actually feel kind of sorry for him. I'm not sure if he's actually dying of AIDS or even homeless, but I've known a lot of homeless people, from my old job. It's sad what they have to deal with and even more sad to think of all of the things they don't have. It's one thing to rob a bank with a gun and a breifcase (or whatever normal people use), so you can tell he was at his wit's end to do something that extreme. hehe... even if we all know he'd just buy more beer with the money.

Yeah, you're right, it was really sad. I posted this right at the end of my work day so I didn't really get a chance to comment on it. But, you're right, he had to be at his wit's end to use a pitchfork to rob a bank.

And, just so ya know, a "gun and a briefcase" is the normal Hollywood robbery :) Most real robberies (at a financial institution anyway) involve a threatening note and, at most, the robber's hand in his pocket implying he has a gun. And, the average robber only gets about $2,000 - $4,000 (assuming he gets away).

I just mention all of that because before I worked here I imagined all robberies went like Hollywood portrays them: a hold up that involves gathering money from each teller and the vault (upwards of $50,000 or more) and possibly gathering hostages. This rarely happens in the real world...

Of course, a pitchfork is rarely used in the real world too. Perhaps he'll start a new fad? lol
